Anurag Goel says Render's word-of-mouth growth came from application developers, who love trying new tools and telling others about them.
Goel says Render's fast time to value, where a connected GitHub repo spins up a live server with a URL and certificates, sets it apart from AWS.
Goel admits skipping a free tier was a mistake, and Render spent 2022 and 2023 fixing margins and efficiency before spending on marketing.
Render reached $10M ARR through word of mouth alone
Render is building a simple cloud for application developers, a group the big cloud providers underserve because their revenue comes from enterprise DevOps contracts. A product that gets a live server running in minutes spreads by word of mouth, which took Render to $10m ARR without marketing spend. Fixing unit margins came before growth spending, and AI-driven application growth is now accelerating demand.
Takeaways
Word of mouth is the sign of product market fit. Goel says fit shows when growth is natural and users spread the word. Application developers love trying new tools and telling others, and Render signs up hundreds of thousands of developers monthly, all through word of mouth.
Fast time to value fuels referrals. Connecting a GitHub repo gives a live server with a URL and certificates already set up, while AWS is a nightmare for simple servers. Srugo says referral incentives rarely create buzz. Goel cites Superhuman, which was slow to access yet raved about.
Pick a specific customer and differentiate. Goel says hyperscalers build for DevOps teams because their money comes from large enterprise contracts, leaving application developers with a poor approximation. Srugo adds big companies are unlikely to prioritize this. Render will not compete on data centers or GPU spending.
Margins had to be fixed before marketing. Render's infrastructure was inefficient at first, and skipping a free tier was a mistake. The free tier arrived after the Series A and raised cloud burn. Much of 2022 and 2023 went to efficiency, and a January 2023 price rise slowed growth with little churn.
Engineers did support until after the Series A. Engineers covered support on week-long rotations, which let Goel hear customers directly and shape the roadmap. Dedicated support hiring began after the Series A. Fewer than 10 support staff now serve more than 6m developers.
AI has multiplied demand for Render. AI has exploded the number of applications being built, and stretched DevOps teams turn to self-serve platforms. Traction began at the end of 2024 and spiked in early 2026. Render is launching Workflows for multi-step agents and sandboxes for untrusted code.
Pursue the most ambitious version of your problem. Goel says difficulty is roughly equal across industries, so a big problem pays off as work compounds. He also says founders need founder market fit, choosing work they would keep doing when things go badly.
Render's path to $10M ARR
Goel spent almost five years at Stripe, then about a year and a half picking a problem. He dropped health care after a few months to avoid three-year hospital sales cycles.

He built a one-click GPU-backed Jupyter Notebook that reached about 10,000 data scientists, then chose application developers, a personal call since he had never been a data scientist.
A designer and three engineers, including Goel, spent almost two years building before launching at TechCrunch Disrupt in October 2019, which Render won.
Early customers were often friends whom Goel persuaded to move their sites.
Render hit $10m ARR around the end of 2021 or early 2022 with 25 to 30 people.
