Student loan defaults are poised to hit record levels in 2026, with roughly 45m Americans carrying student debt.
Earnest CEO Matt Palese says only about $10bn of the $100bn in student loans eligible for refinancing was refinanced last year.
Earnest now lets graduate borrowers refinance using a signed job offer before they graduate.
Earnest bets on the refinancing gap in $1.8tn student debt
Student lending is a $1.8tn market where the government sets the terms and most borrowers do not act on them. Earnest's bet is that a digital lender with internal servicing, no fees and underwriting that goes past the credit score can win the small share who do refinance, and widen that share by explaining the system plainly. The opening grows while federal rates sit near historic highs and broad forgiveness is gone.
Takeaways
Most eligible borrowers never refinance. US student loan debt is $1.8tn and about $100bn of it would benefit from refinancing. Only roughly $10bn, about 10%, was refinanced last year. Palese wants that share far higher.
Earnest has refinanced $24bn since 2013. It holds about $10bn on its balance sheet, has served more than 400,000 customers and has over 250,000 active ones. It charges no fees at all and earns the spread between its cost of funds and the borrower's rate.
Underwriting looks past the credit score. FICO is one input. Earnest also weighs career trajectory, free cash flow after taxes and debt obligations, savings behaviour and other income, aiming to price risk accurately and quickly rather than rely on bureau reporting.
The federal safety net is shrinking. Graduate federal rates have sat near 8% for three academic years and broad forgiveness is off the table. SAVE's end gives borrowers a July 1 deadline, roughly 90 days, to choose another plan. About 40% of Earnest's refinanced loans are federal.
Credit card debt pulled Earnest into personal loans. US household card balances run about $1.2tn at an average rate near 21%, so Earnest added fixed-rate personal loans for paying down card debt. Palese says the business is early with plenty of runway.
Servicing in 90 seconds is the moat. Almost all servicing is internal, and Earnest says it connects a customer to a live team member within 90 seconds. Palese treats refinancing as the start of a relationship rather than a one-off transaction.
Palese's advice to borrowers
Act early, before rates or circumstances change.
Refinance selectively, because loans from different academic years carry different rates and refinancing only part of the balance can make sense.
Put freed-up cash flow into savings or a brokerage account so it compounds into real wealth.
Ask a human to check whether staying with the government is the better answer.
The teacher who did not know her loans
Palese married in 2013.
His wife, then a teacher, did not know her outstanding balance or the rates she was paying.
