Bland AI replaces a typhoon-hit enterprise call center, resolving calls at a higher rate than human agents.
Bland AI fires 50% of customers after its Series A, dropping below $1M to shed white labelers and resellers.
$60K billboards reading 'Still hiring humans?' take Bland AI to $2M revenue by April and a Scale Venture Partners Series A in June.
Bland AI proved 180 investors wrong about phone calls
Bland AI sells voice agents for calls enterprises cannot afford to get wrong, from patient monitoring to polling citizens in unstable countries. Its own models and 400-millisecond latency make a real-sounding call possible, and the buyers are companies spending tens of millions a year on call centers. After 180 investors passed on voice in 2023, cheap attention and relentless enterprise selling turned the bet into six- and seven-figure contracts.
Takeaways
A typhoon proved AI can replace a call center. A large US enterprise moved all its Philippine call traffic to Bland without testing at scale. Bland resolved more calls than human agents, with no wait time and better satisfaction, which Granet calls the first full AI replacement of a call center.
Bland built its own models to cut latency. Bland does not use OpenAI or Anthropic models. Building from the ground up let it cut latency from five seconds to 400 milliseconds over about a year and a half and learn from a caller's audio patterns.
Bland serves a trillion-dollar call center market. Bland runs about 3.5m calls a week for over 170 enterprises and 350,000 developers. Its customers spend roughly $15bn a year on call centers, and by phone number one in four Americans has talked to Bland.
Bland fired half its customers after Series A. White labelers and resellers were unrealized value rather than pain, so Granet cut them, dropping revenue below $1m. Serving the January to April surge caused about a year of damage to the product roadmap.
180 investors said voice was not a thing. Bland began writing insurance denial appeals and lost its only deal, $100,000 with a ten-clinic chain, three quarters through Y Combinator. Granet pitched roughly 180 investors in three weeks, and nearly all said people would not be making phone calls a year later.
Bland takes the hardest, most urgent calls. The mission covers remote patient monitoring of a 90-year-old with a blood pressure reading of 190 over 70, and polls in countries with recent unrest where leaked results could put people at risk.
Enterprise sales playbook
Map the org chart and find the buying power. Enterprise buying is a team sport, and everyone in the chain spends political capital.
Send tailored internal newsletters to the customer's whole org so updates create clarity and penetration beyond your champion.
Be loud rather than sneaky. Follow up relentlessly and sit through month-long silences, because forcing the customer's hand can sell you out of a deal.
Never give anything without getting something. Granet raised a liability cap from $10m to $12m in exchange for signing by a set date.
