[00:20:27] S2: So that's Anthropic. I'm sure we'll be returning to it as as the IPO gets closer. Again, they haven't said in this document how much they wanna raise. Previously, it was leaked around a $100,000,000,000 is what they're trying to raise. This week, Mark Zuckerberg was like, hold my beer. I wanna raise 95 to a $100,000,000,000 for my AI build out. The day before on Sunday, Elon Musk is like, hold my beer. I'm raising $40,000,000,000 in debt to buy GPUs. So between these three companies in the space of twenty four hours, $250,000,000,000, they're telling the markets, this is what we're gonna do. This is what... We're gonna raise this money, this is what we're gonna spend it on. It's really extraordinary. I mean, you know, it'd be interesting to see how... What what institutions decide if they have to decide indeed between one or the other. [00:21:18] S3: And also what this does for OpenAI's IPO, as and when and if that comes. It has felt all year that there's been a race between the two of them, who's going to go first, Anthropic sort of overtaken. But are they sort of testing the water for OpenAI?

[00:21:18] S3: And also what this does for OpenAI's IPO, as and when and if that comes. It has felt all year that there's been a race between the two of them, who's going to go first, Anthropic sort of overtaken. But are they sort of testing the water for OpenAI? [00:21:34] S2: Yeah. And and, you know, you talk to some people and like, there's only so much money in the world. And then other people are like, well, no, there's plenty. You know, this is like a... This is railroads. This is canals. This is a once in a millennia opportunity. People will find a way to get in, but we'll find out. Right? Because I think OpenAI is now looking at probably early to, next year is what I hear. But, again, they're gonna be raising a whole boatload of money. So... Yeah. [00:22:01] S3: I wonder if it's all... If if it's... If the actual float's gonna happen before Tech Summit. I don't know what's difference. [00:22:08] S2: Is that was like a subtle pivot to plug our upcoming event in London? [00:22:13] S3: Upcoming event, which you are flying over for to cohost. Yeah. And we're gonna have Evan Spiegel from Snap. [00:22:18] S2: November November 10. [00:22:20] S3: That's right. That's right. [00:22:22] S2: Yeah. So we can... You can come hang out for the afternoon in London with me and Katie and Evan Spiegel from Snap and OpenAI and Anthropic and all the great and the good. They're all gonna be there. It's gonna be a really good time. You guys should all come. And where do they get tickets, or where did they find out about it?

If you look at times.co.uk/events, you'll find it. Listen, before we wrap things up, we should probably address the flyby interview from last week. We had a very... An unusually short episode. [00:22:54] S2: We did. [00:22:55] S3: Because we recorded an interview with James Crook, who led the aerodynamic development of the new Tesla Roadster, we featured in The Times last week. You guys will know the flying car, it drives up the ramp, it drives upside down, does a little swizzle, and then lands on its rocket launcher. It was a great shot, but... [00:23:14] S2: A little swizzle? [00:23:16] S3: Little twizzle circle in [00:23:18] S2: the air. Is it a twizzle or a swizzle? [00:23:19] S3: I love it. [00:23:21] S2: Is that just a flip? I don't know what a A flip. A swizzle. So I'm gonna look that [00:23:25] S3: up after. [00:23:26] S2: Swizzle And [00:23:26] S3: then, Tesla's flying car. James Crook from The UK. He used to work in Formula One. Anyway, he's been told that he should stop talking to the press. So anyway, we decided not to play out the interview.

So anyway, we decided not to play out the interview. [00:23:41] S2: But I will say it was fun to actually talk to somebody who's just like, you know, this is actually just a cool thing. Like, and it's an... It was in a way to inspire people. Like, look, the impossible is possible, and I helped make it happen, and that's really cool. You know, when we talk about all this, like, existential dread and everything, it's actually... You know? And the last thing I'll say about Anthropic, they did start out being like, we might be able to cure cancer and Alzheimer's. And it's the thing that everybody keeps talking about, but it's been drowned out by the scary bits because there's been so little to grab onto for the good bits. Right? There's not been this, like, breakthrough. We've had, like, these AIs are committing crimes and doing all this scary stuff, but we have yet to be like, wow. This AI just created this cancer treatment or came up with this new material that's really gonna move the ball on climate change or whatever. But I do think that is the flip side to all of this is like, there is great abundance supposedly over the horizon. It just hasn't manifested yet, so we have all the all the scary stuff in the meantime.
00:24:41 · Katie Prescott, Danny Fortson
[00:24:41] S3: And going back to the beginning of what we were speaking about, actually, it is a far more positive document than the one that was trailed. And it says Yeah. In big letters right at the top that AI is one of the most consequential technologies in human history and talks about accelerating scientific innovation, increasing economic growth rates, curing diseases, all of that sort of stuff. So that is in there. It's clearly not the fun stuff that you want to talk about down the pub along with your more expensive pint off to the budget. [00:25:10] S2: I can't... I want an outrage. Outrage. [00:25:13] S3: I know her. Just as you're about to come over as well. [00:25:15] S2: I know. I feel depressed. [00:25:16] S3: I'm so sorry. [00:25:18] S2: I'm so sorry. So that is it for this week's episode of Times Tech, but we will be back on Sunday with our episode of the big interview with Jaron Lanier, futurist at Microsoft, well respected computer scientist to talk all things AI in the state of tech. [00:25:35] S3: Well, thank you for listening. And if you don't already, do follow us so that you don't miss an episode. [00:25:40] S2: See you next week. [00:25:41] S3: See you next week.
