[00:52:30] S1: We've got... We'll be assembling a clean room, which I don't think we showed you, but that's on the other side. But as I understand, you yourself are actually a proficient welder. Is that true? [00:52:41] S0: I made a very bold claim, but I did learn how to weld in college. [00:52:47] S1: I think we should put this to the test. I'm I'm down to [00:52:50] S0: I'm down I was called a prodigy, so [00:52:54] S1: we'll see. Still We'll the find out. We'll find out. So we have some welding materials back here. Shall we get you in? [00:53:03] S0: Sure. Do I have to like, should I [00:53:05] S1: change You might have change it. [00:53:07] S0: It all changed. All right. We've now advanced. We're now with Miguel, the engineering operations lead here at Starcloud. What are you going to show us today and what's your background? [00:53:15] S4: Yeah. So we're gonna do a little bit of welding, just traditional welding. We do a lot of laser welding here at Starcloud, but we can also fabricate pretty much anything out of steel, aluminum, titanium, stainless steel. So we're set up for doing MIG welding right now. So we're gonna have you run some beads and make some sparks. And, so before here, I was the welder for Helion Energy where we build fusion generators. I ran their fabrication shop over there for over a year. And before that, I've been working a lot of different fab shops, doing architectural, structural, you know, welding and fabrication. And before that, spent a decade in the US Army. [00:53:53] S0: Oh my God. [00:53:54] S4: I've deploying overseas.

[00:53:54] S4: I've deploying overseas. [00:53:55] S0: How did you get into welding? [00:53:57] S4: I wanted to do something very different. I wanted to do something that was, you know, neutral. So in the sense that I was contributing to society in a different way. So I decided to get into fabrication and welding after listening to Mike Rowe, the guy from dirty jobs. He said, you know, United States really needs welders and it needs people to build stuff with their hands. And I was like, well, I can build stuff with my hands. So that led me to this career path, which has been very rewarding. [00:54:21] S0: It's very satisfying. [00:54:23] S4: Yeah. It's a lot [00:54:23] S1: of fun. [00:54:24] S0: It's a little addicting. [00:54:24] S4: Yeah. A lot of fun. A lot of fun. [00:54:26] S1: That sounds like you. You posted recently on X. Somebody was like, American needs more welders, you're posting shit about how good you are at welding. So now we're going find out. Find Now going [00:54:36] S0: out. Used to be very good. So for background, this is not at all in this world, but I went to college for studio art. Like I grew up as an artist and I was also very entrepreneurial. So I ended up going that path, but I went to college for art. And so the first year of studio art, do every discipline, every practice. And one of them we went and we did metalwork, woodwork, glassblowing. [00:55:04] S4: Nice. [00:55:05] S0: All of the fun flame stuff. Like, was so fun. [00:55:08] S1: Was a lot of fun.
00:55:08 · Philip Johnston, Molly O'Shea, Miguel Rivera
[00:55:08] S1: Was a lot of fun. [00:55:09] S0: And then I'm like, well, making this for fun isn't really a job. Might as well be doing that, but I have trades. I don't really understand that, but it was so much fun. Nice. I was called a prodigy. We will see. [00:55:24] S1: We're gonna find out. We're gonna give you a [00:55:27] S4: little bit of PPE. Okay. So the sparks can burn you. So just put this jacket on and we're gonna give you some Should [00:55:33] S0: I tie my hair back? Don't think have I'll just keep it front of [00:55:37] S4: As long as it's behind you, you're fine. And make sure that you button at least a couple of [00:55:41] S1: the buttons. I'll button them. [00:55:44] S4: As long as you have all this on, closed toe shoes, you'll be just fine. If you feel anything hot, just stop and step back where you should be fine. [00:55:51] S0: Yeah. I remember we weren't allowed to wear any polyester. [00:55:54] S1: Yeah. [00:56:00] S4: Perfect. And then you can do your sleeves as well. [00:56:06] S0: You haven't done any of this? [00:56:09] S1: Why? Is [00:56:10] S4: he not? He's never here. [00:56:12] S1: My god. [00:56:13] S4: Traveling the world alone. [00:56:13] S0: That's true. He's always on stage somewhere. Why aren't you in the shop? [00:56:17] S4: So we'll have you put this on first. So the way that you put it on goes over your head, and you click this and then you can leave this up, right? Then when it's time [00:56:24] S1: to weld, you can put it down. You can see

[00:56:24] S1: to weld, you can put it down. You can see [00:56:26] S4: through it And just the second that you start welding, it'll auto darken. Okay. So, you don't have to worry about doing anything. All you have to do is put it on, crank this down. [00:56:35] S1: Okay. You'll be ready [00:56:35] S4: to go. Try do this one first. I'm gonna do the same. I'm gonna put on some PPE. [00:56:45] S1: Do you have, like, any kind of glass? I'm gonna be quite far back. [00:56:48] S4: You can use the same one right there. [00:56:49] S1: This one? [00:56:50] S4: Yep. Can put that on. [00:56:50] S1: Who is she? [00:57:14] S4: Very nice. [00:57:15] S0: That one, my hand skipped a little bit. [00:57:17] S4: Yep. That's fine. Beautiful. We can do one more if you want. [00:57:20] S0: Okay. One more. [00:57:21] S1: Alright. Last one. This is when the counts. [00:57:23] S0: Alright. [00:57:24] S4: Stay nice and tight. Closer. Nice. [00:57:49] S1: Alright. You're hired. [00:57:50] S0: Not bad. [00:57:51] S1: Bang up. [00:57:52] S0: Let's go. Nice. America needs welders. [00:57:56] S1: Nice joke. Cool. Thank you, Miguel. [00:57:59] S4: You're very welcome. [00:58:00] S0: Is this how much fun? That's my real reaction. [00:58:10] S1: On a scale of one [00:58:11] S0: ten, like, what are we talking about here? [00:58:13] S4: We're a solid five. [00:58:14] S1: Wow. That's amazing. [00:58:17] S0: For ten [00:58:18] S4: years and don't do a job like that. [00:58:20] S1: Damn. Damn. Hey. That's what we got. Pay attention and take good instructions.

[00:58:20] S1: Damn. Damn. Hey. That's what we got. Pay attention and take good instructions. [00:58:24] S0: Always stay tight. That's right. We do. That's great. Cool. Thank you. [00:58:33] S1: They just lifted the satellite. I don't if you wanna... Maybe it's too late to get footage of that. But if you want, we just... [00:58:38] S0: Yeah. Yeah. Let's go over there. So we just did the welding and... [00:58:42] S1: You crushed it. [00:58:42] S0: I'm a [00:58:43] S1: five. Out of 10. He didn't [00:58:46] S4: say out [00:58:47] S1: of 10. It could be out He [00:58:48] S0: did say out of 10. [00:58:48] S1: Did he? Yes. I thought he said you're a solid five. No, he [00:58:50] S0: said you're a solid five out of 10. [00:58:52] S1: Did he? Okay, okay, okay. [00:58:53] S0: Was like, [00:58:54] S1: damn, that's pretty good. [00:58:58] S0: Okay. But I was I was wondering, like, how does the flow change of how many people are working on the floor versus up in the offices through the different stages and processes of building out Starcloud two?

[00:58:58] S0: Okay. But I was I was wondering, like, how does the flow change of how many people are working on the floor versus up in the offices through the different stages and processes of building out Starcloud two? [00:59:12] S1: Yeah. So actually, most people you can see are both engineering and we have all the engineers make sure that they are hands on with the satellite as well. So half the time these people will be upstairs designing stuff on CAD, the other half the time they're down here fiddling with wires and testing stuff. We also have a technician team. That was Miguel. We got four technicians. Some more coming on soon. Maybe five now. I don't wanna get it wrong. And their job is, like, welding and fabrication, making... Actually producing the satellite. So, yeah, Miguel's team... We... The the whole computer module here is an aluminum box that they in house produced and fabricated. [00:59:56] S0: And I am contributing to that. [00:59:58] S1: You are contributing a huge amount. You need [01:00:02] S0: me, let me know. I can come on. [01:00:03] S1: For your listeners, it is official. You have now done more welding at Starcloud than I have. [01:00:08] S0: Wow. You gotta really visit Miguel. I think he's waiting for you [01:00:13] S1: to Yeah. Yeah. [01:00:13] S0: He'll put in some work. [01:00:15] S1: Yeah. Yeah. [01:00:15] S0: You're not doing enough. Yeah. Bailey, tell us a little bit about yourself. I know we're in front of Starcloud two, something just happened, you guys are testing things. But we'd love to learn more about you and how you contributed.
