[00:07:41] S2: Or do you think it's going to be a lot of noise around hearings? The incoming oversight chair said, quote, lawyer up. [00:07:46] S3: You should have hearings because there's a lot of corruption out there. And I'm from Chicago. I have a high standard when it comes to corruption. You should have those hearings. But if you don't deliver lobbying and ethics reform, those hearings was just about. [00:08:01] S0: Vindication. Not vindication. Vindictiveness. Deliver. [00:08:06] S3: That change so that the Republicans who took a bet on the Kansas senator, the Republicans that took a bet on a Democratic senator in Texas, then you'll have said to that coalition, that was a good bet. [00:08:18] S2: Let's talk about 2028. [00:08:19] S0: Let's say we did and we don't. No, let's talk about 2028. [00:08:23] S2: Who do you think this puts in prime position? [00:08:27] S3: Oh, look, that's a fair question, but not the right time to ask the question. [00:08:31] S0: I think what you will see— Well, because you're probably going to run. Well, look, here's how I look at it. [00:08:36] S3: In 2024, the party didn't have a choice. We were told to. 2020, the same thing. 2016, you got to. [00:08:42] S0: Go back to 08. [00:08:43] S3: It's been 20 years since our party had a good thrashing, and we should have a good thrashing. [00:08:48] S0: We should have a good debate. [00:08:49] S3: Now, as I joke, 2028, it's going to be Baskin and Robbins. [00:08:53] S0: You're going to have 31 flavors. [00:08:54] S3: And if I decide to do this, I'm going to be Rocky Road.

[00:08:54] S3: And if I decide to do this, I'm going to be Rocky Road. [00:08:58] S2: Okay, but here's the problem. Can someone like you win a primary in the Democratic coalition? [00:09:03] S1: Sure. [00:09:04] S0: Even when you have. [00:09:06] S2: very left-wing progressive candidates that are also likely going to throw their name in the wing. [00:09:11] S0: That's great. That's good.
00:09:11 · Rahm Emanuel, Rahm Emanuel
[00:09:11] S0: That's great. That's good. [00:09:12] S3: Look, I'm good with across the board having a good thrashing. But here's what I know. In Michigan, or take Ohio, or take Wisconsin, or you can also go to Maine. Four states, Minnesota being blue, Ohio being red, Michigan being a battleground. You had a governor and a Senate candidate The governors all came out of the pragmatic wing of the party, and the senators all came out of the progressive wing. In those states, from blue to red to purple, the pragmatic governor won by an average 2.5% better than the progressive. Now, you could take a lark and just think that this election says that we are now the majority party and the country believes it. agrees with Democrats, or you can say, okay, there's a lesson here, and I believe when you look across the board in New Jersey governor's race, five primary candidates, the most conservative wins, and the second, or rather the third, was also on the moderate to conservative side. So look, I just think ideology and the way I look at it. Look, when I was mayor, I took on a failed education system that was failing our kids. When I was the president's chief of staff, I took on a failed financial system and a failed health care system. When I was President Clinton's senior advisor, I took on a The NRA and the insurance companies are two separate. [00:10:39] S0: Giving kids, 10 million kids, healthcare they never had. [00:10:41] S3: I've never accepted the status quo when it fails the American people. [00:10:45] S0: And if people like that, great. If not, I'll go fly fishing.

[00:10:45] S0: And if people like that, great. If not, I'll go fly fishing. [00:10:48] S2: I know you're a good fly fisher. I know you're not here to make any sort of big announcement for 2028, but Danny, I have to say, the former Chicago mayor, former Chief of Staff to President Obama, former Ambassador to Japan, Does at the end sound like he's excited potentially about throwing his name in the ring for 2028? Yeah, maybe one extra. [00:11:08] S0: It's all the Starbucks coffee. [00:11:10] S1: We need to get you some more Starbucks coffee. I think that's the only answer to this. Thank you so much. [00:11:15] S0: Thanks. [00:11:16] S1: Both of you for joining for that excellent conversation. Anne-Marie Hordurd and Rahm Emanuel, whose career spans many legislative, executive and diplomatic roles.
