monday.com turned flexible work software into $1bn of ARR
monday.com turned flexibility into a growth engine. The product began as an internal Wix prototype and launched in 2014 on a schema-less database, letting teams build their own workflows. That pulled in HR, finance, client management and ticketing users across 200 verticals, which drives expansion and carries the company upmarket. It now runs a Rule of 60 profile on more than $1bn of ARR.
Takeaways
ARR compounded from $400,000 to over $1bn. Spun out of Wix and launched as daPulse in 2014 with $400,000 of ARR, monday.com hit $6.5m by the end of 2016, then grew 10 times over three years and 12 times over five.
Flexibility is the product's wedge. Monday DB, a schema-less database, lets customers assemble their own workflows rather than adapt to fixed software. 60% run two or more core workflows across 200 verticals, and about 70% of customers are non-technical or blue-collar.
The mix has shifted upmarket. In 2019, 76 customers spent more than $50,000 a year. Today 3,200 do, growing 40% year on year, plus 1,200 spending over $100,000. The largest account went from 7,000 seats to 80,000.
Net dollar retention now sits at 112%. It was 100% in 2019 and 150% for $50,000-plus customers in 2021. Today large customers run near 115% and $100,000 accounts 116%, with five revenue levers producing the overall figure.
Upfront billing funds the growth. Tiers run from $10 to $30 a seat a month and about 80% of customers bill upfront, a bias Roy Mann brought from Wix. The 2024 pricing change added $30m of revenue, about four points of growth.
A Rule of 60 financial profile. Gross margin is around 90%, with $145m of EBITDA and about $300m of free cash flow, on $1.4bn of cash and no debt. Management has made no acquisitions or buybacks, and the stock trades near 10 to 11 times revenue.
AI and partners are the next leg. AI Blocks actions grew from 3m to 14m, and partners went from 12% to 20% of new ARR. Hensman argues the most defensible software companies build a commercial platform of services and developers around the customer.
