Peacock's $261m Q3 EBITDA marks a second straight profitable quarter, up $470m year over year, as NBCUniversal heads toward becoming a standalone company.
NBCU will bundle ad-supported Peacock with a YouTube Premium tier next year and extend its linear deal with YouTube TV, which has passed 10m subscribers.
Putting all 3,200 hours of the Milan Cortina Olympics live on Peacock doubled digital minutes versus every prior Winter Games combined and doubled ad revenue.
NBCUniversal bets broadcast reach can power Peacock
NBCUniversal is preparing to stand alone as a company built around broadcast reach and live sports, with an ad-supported Peacock as its streaming hub. Matt Strauss argues that fragmentation makes a broadcast network more valuable, because NBC can gather huge live audiences and push them into streaming. The YouTube partnership extends that logic, bundling Peacock with YouTube Premium and YouTube TV rather than keeping everything inside one app. Peacock's recent profitability gives the strategy its first proof point.
Takeaways
NBCU merged broadcast and streaming teams. About eighteen months ago NBCU collapsed separate broadcast and streaming programming, marketing, product, technology, research and ad sales groups into single teams. Strauss says this lets the company aggregate linear and streaming viewing into one audience measure.
Broadcast reach is a superpower, Strauss says. NBC is the number one network in total viewers in 2026. A February run that included the Super Bowl and the Milan Cortina Olympics reached over 225m viewers in seventeen days. The NBA All-Star Game was part of that stretch. About 20% of US TV households still use antennas.
Peacock reaches profitability on advertising. Peacock posted $261m of EBITDA in Q3, its second consecutive profitable quarter and $470m better year over year. About 80% of subscribers are on the ad tier, and sports plus streaming rose from roughly 30% to 60% of NBCU advertising revenue.
All-live Olympics bet paid off. Milan Cortina had roughly 3,200 hours of content, all available live on Peacock, a decision Strauss calls controversial. It drew about 25m prime-time viewers, ratings 96% higher than Beijing, double the digital minutes of all other Winter Olympics combined and double the advertising revenue.
Peacock bets on YouTube bundle. Next year Peacock will bundle its ad-supported tier with a tier of YouTube Premium, plus deeper data and FreeWheel integration. Strauss also extended the YouTube TV linear deal, keeping NBCU channels on the service.
Content spending is a mutual fund, Strauss says. Strauss asks what content drives acquisition, engagement, frequency and customer lifetime value. NBCU did not renew its WWE premium live events deal but kept most subscribers, licensed a smaller package and reallocated the money to other parts of the portfolio.
What Strauss predicts next
Peacock will be one of the top distributed streaming services in the United States a year from now.
YouTube TV is likely to become the number one pay TV distributor in the next couple of years.
NBCU will likely be a separate company within a year.
