James Cadwallader - Raising $180M from Sequoia during a walk, Dropping out of high-school, Trading Gold, AI Slop is a skill issue, Why he moved to New York
ProFound raises $180M Series D off-market from Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins and Lightspeed after a Base Camp walk.
ProFound's thesis is that agents become the new customer, so every business will care how ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok talk about its products.
Cadwallader calls AI slop a skill issue and aims to build for marketing what Adobe did in the cloud transition.
ProFound's bet that AI agents become the buyer
This episode is about the bet that AI agents, not people, become the buyers. If a model answers the question, the only marketing that matters is what the model reads, so ProFound sells enterprises the tools to shape it. Cadwallader got there after a decade of failed and small exits, and argues the market decides a company's fate more than the team or the product.
Takeaways
Agents are becoming the customer. When a buyer asks ChatGPT about a car, an agent reads the manufacturer's site, third-party blogs, review sites and Reddit instead of the buyer browsing. Cadwallader bets every company will care how AI describes its products, and ProFound sells the software that shapes those answers.
The market is the river. His lesson from Kyra, a London marketing tech company he left in 2022, is that the team are rowers and the product is the boat, while the market is the river. Olympian rowers in a tuned boat going the wrong way get nowhere.
AI slop is a skill issue. Marketers producing generic output are using the tools badly. Better prompts will not fix it. Brands need a marketing system of agents that turns out original content for models to consume, and a marketer's role will change the way a software engineer's has.
Raised $180m without a process. During a break at Base Camp, Cadwallader walked with a Sequoia partner and talked through the business. The partner said they should do the round, so ProFound raised off-market. Kleiner Perkins and Lightspeed are also backers.
Move to America sooner. He tells his younger self to leave London for the US, arguing America is built on immigrants and risk takers and that a tier-one backer like Sequoia attracts talent and capital. Europe attaches stigma to failure that the US does not.
Next year is market share and product. Cadwallader wants to build for marketing what Adobe built in the move to cloud, and says the next twelve months are about market share and product. ProFound has raised about $350m, employs around 400 people and works with a third of the Fortune 100.
How ProFound came together
He sold bacon sandwiches at school, never went to university, and spent 18 to 23 starting businesses, trading gold and importing from China.
Kyra, his first tech company, was built with cofounders he met on Reddit. A 2013 consumer app found millions of users but no revenue, so it became a software-based agency matching enterprise brands with creators.
After burning $250,000 of his own money on a consumer business and being turned down by every VC, he joined South Park Commons looking for a cofounder rather than a thesis.
