Survey of 350 senior US and UK underwriters finds 51% say AI's most meaningful value is saving time and manual admin, while only 21% credit it with better decision quality.
Hyperexponential's Hyper Operator, an AI agent that runs across its underwriting platform within insurer-set guardrails, aims to free underwriters from simple renewals to focus on complex new business.
Jamie Wilson calls the succession paradox a risk: senior judgment is the top future concern, yet coaching junior underwriters ranks tenth among company investment priorities.
Insurers use AI for speed while underwriters want better judgment
Hyperexponential's survey of senior underwriters shows the industry has used AI mostly to make underwriting faster, while underwriters judge excellence by decision quality. Wilson argues the next step is agents that handle routine work within insurer-set guardrails. That frees experienced underwriters for complex risks and for passing on judgment before it leaves the industry.
Takeaways
AI has mostly raised the underwriting floor. In the Underwriting Edge Survey of 350 senior commercial and specialty underwriters in the US and UK, run with Coleman Parks, 51% said AI's main value was saving time and admin. Only 21% cited better decisions, and 3% saw no value yet.
Underwriters prize judgment far above speed. Asked what makes an excellent underwriter, respondents named risk selection, appetite discipline, technical depth and commercial instinct on price. Speed barely registered. Grant agrees that getting decisions right comes first, with efficiency following, and warns teams against complacency once they do.
Agents move work, humans handle exceptions. Wilson separates AI assistance, where an underwriter does the work and calls on AI to ingest a risk or check guidelines, from agentic workflows. There an agent moves work along and hands back to a human when it reaches its limits or guardrails.
Hyper Operator acts within insurer-set guardrails. Announced in July at HX Live, the agent runs across the platform and acts on the workflow. Insurers dial guardrails, defined by their technical portfolio teams, up or down for each portfolio segment. The goal is freeing underwriters from simple renewals for complex new business.
Senior judgment is leaving before being passed on. Underwriters' top future concern is senior expertise exiting the industry, yet coaching junior staff ranked tenth among company investment priorities. Wilson suggests AI could coach juniors by surfacing how seniors handled similar risks. Grant hears more young people interested in insurance careers.
Point solutions may limit end-to-end agents. About 95% of HX customers arrive with existing systems, and the platform has always been architecturally flexible about integration. Wilson warns that buying a separate tool for each underwriting step may prevent insurers from running agentic workflows across the whole process.
Customer pull drove growth, including in the US. HX began as a pricing tool until customers pulled it into adjacent steps such as referrals and peer review, prompting a full underwriting workbench about three years ago. About 35bn of premium is bound yearly, with US growth from multinationals plus new carriers and MGAs.
