Exein is raising $270m at a $1.7bn valuation to fund an expansion focused mostly on physical AI, announced from the New York Stock Exchange.
Gianni Cuozzo, Exein's founder and CEO, says the round was oversubscribed and closed at a set ticket size, after 400% year-on-year growth for three years.
Cuozzo says Exein wants to be the CrowdStrike of physical systems, predicting physical AI will be the next big battleground for AI.
Exein raises $270M to secure the coming wave of physical AI
Exein is betting that physical AI, meaning devices running foundation models without human oversight, will need its own security layer, and that the company is already inside the supply chain that builds those devices. Embedded in chipset and manufacturer software, it reaches billions of devices. Regulation, cheaper AI-driven attacks and geopolitical conflict push demand, and the new $270M round funds the push into the US.
Takeaways
Exein raised $270M at a $1.7B valuation. The round was oversubscribed and closed at a set ticket size. Headline led, with Sofina and Goldman Sachs joining and all previous investors returning, which Cuozzo reads as approval of how the company executes. Funds go mainly to physical AI expansion.
Physical AI is the next stage of connected systems. Cuozzo traces SCADA and PLCs, then embedded systems, then IoT, now devices hosting foundation models and operating without human intervention. Exein already serves the embedded supply chain, with customers in robotics, humanoids, drones and self-driving cars.
Distribution runs through the embedded supply chain. Exein started with instruction set makers such as ARM, then chipset vendors. Its MediaTek deal places its software inside the board support package. It also works with ODMs in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Europe and the US, reaching about 2bn devices.
Three mega trends drive 400% annual growth. Regulation shares cybersecurity responsibility between users and manufacturers. Foundation models make attacks on physical systems cheaper by executing full attack chains. War in Ukraine and the Middle East raises cyber warfare risk. Exein has grown 400% yearly for three years.
Exein aims to be the CrowdStrike of physical systems. Cuozzo says no such leader exists yet for physical AI, and he sees AI code security becoming a solved market. Success means more US distribution and becoming the name for physical AI, including conversion of existing devices.
Capital goes to execution, M&A and the US. Exein is opening a San Francisco office near chipset makers and physical AI firms, and seeks a US acquisition. Acquisition targets are mainly talent and distribution, because the market is in a talent war.
Founders should pick a niche global problem. Exein sold its first license in South Korea from Rome and aimed to be global from day one. Cuozzo says geography matters less than before, though network still counts, and customers care about the problem solved.
