SpaceXAI built Grok Bot from scratch in one month
SpaceXAI built Grok Bot, a team of AI bots for knowledge work, from scratch in about a month instead of adding it to its coding products. Each bot runs in the cloud on its own computer, so it can handle work tools that lack good APIs. Hands-on onboarding and constant cutting of features decided what shipped.
Takeaways
Grok Bot started from scratch, not as a feature. A very small team was sent into an isolated part of the office for about a month, from first line of code to internal prototype. Roman says adding a tab per form factor to coding products like Cursor feels cluttered, like shipping an org chart.
Hand-onboarding early users shaped the product. The team spent about two weeks onboarding a couple hundred early users by hand, with the core team on every call to fix problems immediately. Many users ran five to ten bots, then promoted one to chief of staff.
Cloud runtime and a computer per bot mattered most. Roman calls these two early decisions critical, since many work tools lack well-supported MCPs or APIs. Sales used bots to fill Salesforce gaps, recruiting under Adam Ward used them for sourcing, and 99% of automations are written in natural language.
Ruthless simplicity beats feature count. The team unshipped many experimental features and hides tool calls and chain-of-thought output. Roman wants easy setup without jargon like skills, and says OpenClaw's hacky home setup would never scale, though it proved bots with tools and a computer go far.
Proactive bots are the next shift. Roman predicts the computer concept will be abstracted away from users and bots will act on their own rather than wait for prompts. Examples include a QA tester bot and an always-on information agent connected to X and internal systems.
Cursor survives by never feeling it has won. Roman joined at about 15 people, and it now exceeds a thousand. The culture reinvents itself every few months and treats the product as something to delete once models catch up. He says Microsoft culturally cannot move that fast.
Moats come from making impossible things possible. Roman tells founders to make impossible things possible today, and Lenny agrees moats are discovered, not planned. SpaceXAI rests on coding products, Grok Bot for knowledge work, and model training aimed at practical AI rather than super intelligence.
Getting started with Grok Bot
Give Grok Bot access to Slack and email, then ask what it can take off your plate.
Roman's bot suggested five tasks, and two of them were useful.
Roman has his bots write their digests to a database he can read easily.
