Mariana Minerals, a software-first metals miner, has raised about $400m at a $1.6bn valuation, with Breakthrough Energy Ventures writing the original first check.
JC Lozano says the binding constraint on AI and robotics is metal supply, not ideas, and that Mariana aims to buy mining assets when markets doubt operators can deliver.
Lozano says the company's East Texas lithium refinery went from inception to full production in under three years, and Mariana wants to run projects four times faster than traditional miners.
A software-first miner bets metal supply limits AI
Mariana Minerals is betting that metal, not ideas, will limit AI, robotics and defense tech, and that existing miners are not ready for that demand. Heavy mining equipment is already digital, so software and autonomy can run mines faster and unlock deposits others find uneconomic. The company buys assets when valuations crash and owns everything through to finished metal.
Takeaways
Metal supply, not ideas, limits AI growth. Lozano argues the bottleneck on demand from robotics, data centers, defense tech and the energy transition is metal supply, not imagination. Lithium rose from about $20 to $80 per kilogram around 2019 and 2020, and the West lacks trained miners and haul truck operators.
Buy troubled mining assets in the valuation trough. Junior explorers find and characterize ore bodies, then valuations peak and crash when markets doubt operators can deliver. Mariana aims to buy assets in that trough. Lozano says autonomy unlocks medium-sized, low-grade US deposits that are uneconomic for current miners.
Software and autonomy compress mining timelines. Mariana runs four software suites, Capital Project OS, Mine OS, Plant OS and Biz OS. Heavy equipment is already digital through its CAN bus, so onboard computers can control it. The East Texas lithium project took under three years versus six or seven traditionally.
Mariana owns the whole chain, mine to metal. It owns and operates mines and refineries, mining and refining its own material and selling finished metals directly into supply chains. Founded in late 2024, it partners with outside autonomy companies and does not build all its own equipment.
Capital stack splits research money from build money. Venture money funds research and innovation, while most mine capital expenditure comes from a different investor pool. Mariana has raised about $400m at a $1.6bn valuation, with Breakthrough writing the first check and Khosla doubling down in the Series B.
Hiring favors character, yet technical depth matters. With about 300 people, Lozano or Turner interviews every candidate, screening for genuineness and hard work over current skills. Models still need significant human involvement, so engineers must understand underlying principles to catch errors, since physical laws decide whether a structure stands.
What comes next
The East Texas lithium refinery, under construction, is set to ramp next year, with output expected to go to a battery company.
The next project carries about $250m in capital expenditure, after about $100m for the first.
The company aims to build ten large-scale projects over roughly eight years.
