Starcloud became the fastest-growing unicorn in YC history 17 months after Demo Day, raising $170m led by Benchmark.
Starcloud 1 launched in November 2025 with an Nvidia H100 and ran the first version of Gemini in orbit.
Starcloud filed 88,000 satellites at the FCC for about 20 gigawatts, betting orbital data centers work at $500 per kilogram launch cost.
Starcloud bets cheap launch moves data centers into orbit
Starcloud is betting that compute moves into orbit because launch is getting cheap at the same moment building data centers on Earth is getting hard. The economics only work one way round, since beaming solar power down to Earth needs far cheaper launch than running GPUs up there does, which is why the company abandoned space-based solar. Its edge is building satellites for a fraction of what aerospace primes quote, so each generation gets cheaper as Starship raises the mass it can lift.
Takeaways
Data centers in space beat solar on cost. Starcloud began as Lumen Orbit, beaming solar power to Earth, until Johnston calculated that space solar needed launch at about $50 a kilogram to break even while orbital data centers needed only about $500. The company pivoted.
Starcloud built a satellite for $2m. A prime contractor quoted $75m to $100m to build Starcloud 1. Starcloud 2, including launch, cost $2m. The engineering team in Redmond numbers about 20, roughly half from SpaceX and half from hyperscalers.
Starcloud trained a model in orbit. Starcloud 1 launched in November 2025 with five GPUs, including an Nvidia H100, and did the first fine-tuning of a model in orbit plus the first high-powered inference on satellite imagery. It restarted every two hours until engineers found one faulty trigger among 20.
Rejected by 100 VCs, then Benchmark led. Starcloud tried to raise $2m at a $10m post on a SAFE and was rejected by at least 100 investors, then 20 more after YC. It later raised $170m led by Benchmark, becoming YC's fastest-growing unicorn 17 months after Demo Day.
Starship unlocks gigawatt-scale orbital compute. Starcloud 3 is a 200-kilowatt spacecraft weighing three tons and measuring six metres, with 50 per Starship and about 10 megawatts each. Starcloud has filed 88,000 satellites at the FCC, roughly 20 gigawatts, and Johnston says dawn-dusk sun-synchronous orbit could hold 10 terawatts.
Vacuum cooling and radiation are the hard parts. Starcloud's radiator is 10 times lighter and 500 times cheaper per watt than the ISS's. Starcloud 1 submerged everything in phase-change material and the next satellite uses direct-to-chip liquid cooling. Hardware is radiation-tested at Brookhaven and a Knoxville cyclotron.
Ground data centers are turning politically unpopular. A host argues Starcloud may no longer need to beat terrestrial compute on price as AI data centers draw local opposition. Johnston says New York's ban came faster than he expected and about seven more states may follow.
The founding playbook
Recruit the best space engineers before settling on a product. Johnston hired Adi from SpaceX and Ezra, who built satellites for NASA, and Adi had already registered stellarcloud.com.
Book the first available launch before you have built anything. Founded on 1 January 2024, Starcloud booked a SpaceX rideshare the next day for about $300,000, 18 months out and later pushed to 21.
