UCAS 2026 entry closes 15 October for Oxbridge, medical and veterinary applicants and in January 2026 for everyone else.
The personal statement is now three questions covering course motivation, academic preparation and outside activities, capped at 4,000 characters.
TARA, a new admissions test for UCL, arrives this year and is expected to resemble the TSA.
A guide to UK university admissions for international families
UK admissions is one national system with public rules, and families applying from abroad can learn them. Every applicant uses the same form, and offers rest on grades and admissions tests rather than on any relationship with a university. The fixed calendar and the five-choice cap are the constraints. The levers a family controls are early preparation, sensible course selection, test scores and the personal statement.
Takeaways
One UCAS form covers five choices. Every UK university uses UCAS, and a single application names at most five universities. The 2026 window closes on 15 October for Oxbridge, medicine and veterinary applicants and in January for everyone else.
Preparation should start before summer holidays. Students return in September with about a month to write the personal statement while keeping up with a harder final-year curriculum. Lestak says preparation should begin before the summer break.
Judge the department, not the university. Start from what a student enjoys, then check the ranking of the specific department rather than the whole institution. Lestak suggests three or four open days rather than twenty, especially for the final two choices.
International applicants face the same form, different odds. The UCAS form is identical, but medicine has fewer places for international applicants and qualifications must be checked. Some universities make early, lower-grade offers to fee-paying students, while the G5, Russell Group, Oxford and Cambridge do not.
Admissions tests reward a year of preparation. Tests are sat at Pearson VUE centres, and Lestak says applicants should prepare a year ahead because raw scores creep up annually and timing matters. She calls tests the one fair arena, since every applicant sits the same paper.
GCSE choices close A Level doors. Wrong subjects chosen at the end of year nine limit what can be studied later. Cambridge computer science expects maths and further maths, and Oxford Economics and Management recommends further maths even though it is not required.
School support varies with funding, not type. Funding, facilities and faculty decide how much help a school gives, not whether it is grammar, independent or state. Teachers may lack time, so external support can be a game changer for competitive courses.
New for 2026 entry
The personal statement is now three guiding questions covering why the course, how previous studies prepared the applicant, and what they have done outside education.
Each answer needs at least 350 characters, within a 4,000-character total. Questions two and three carry more weight.

It is not a CV of accolades. Students should explain what they learned, and failure is fine to discuss if it was a turning point.
What comes next
TARA, a new test expected to resemble the TSA, arrives this year. It will not replace the TSA and will be used by UCL, with a couple of other G5 universities expected to follow.
Post-qualification admissions is unlikely soon because of application volume. Offers arrive by mid-May, IB results at the end of July, and A Level results on 15 August.
